On shared hosting you often cannot restart PHP yourself. You can still identify the version the account runs and ask the provider for the package status.

What to look at

Create a temporary PHP file that prints PHP_VERSION and the SAPI name, load it over HTTPS, then delete it. Compare that with the SSH php -v if you have a shell. They differ often. Do not leave phpinfo exposed.

Remediation

Open a ticket that cites CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, the SAPI you observed, and the version string. Ask which package build will be installed and when workers restart. If the host cannot patch an old selector, move the site or pick a selector they have patched. A WAF add-on they sell is not the complete fix PHP described.

Nginx or Apache in front of Shared hosting is still only the proxy or the module loader. Follow the web server guide that matches the handler you found. Temporary PHP settings remain incomplete if the provider cannot patch this week. CISA’s 21 October 2026 alert said internet-facing PHP that cannot be updated should be taken offline until it can. That is a business decision for a store or a campus site, and it is the alternative to pretending the application update was enough.

Questions

Does updating Shared hosting fix PHP2Shell?

No. Shared hosting runs on PHP. The PHP binary or package that serves it has to be patched or replaced.
